ドイツが延長戦の末、１−０でアルゼンチンを破り、西ドイツ時代の９０年大会以来２４年ぶり４度目の優勝を果たしました。
序盤から息詰まる攻防が続いたが延長前半まで無得点。
延長後半８分に途中出場のゲッツェが決勝ゴールを決めました。
アメリカ大陸開催の大会で初めて欧州勢が頂点に立ちました。
